Reflection of Historical Consciousness in the Poetry of Mir Taqi Mir

Abstract

This study explores the manifestation of historical consciousness in the poetry of Mir Taqi Mir, one of the greatest classical Urdu poets. Rather than viewing Mir's poetry merely as an expression of personal emotions and aesthetic excellence, the paper argues that it reflects the political, social, and cultural upheavals of eighteenth-century India, particularly the decline of the Mughal Empire and the devastation of Delhi. Through textual analysis of selected verses, the study demonstrates that Mir transforms individual experiences of love, sorrow, separation, and loneliness into symbols of collective historical suffering and civilizational decline. His poetry presents a profound interaction between personal grief and historical reality, making it an important literary document of its age. The research concludes that Mir's historical consciousness extends beyond the narration of historical events; it reveals the impact of historical transformations on human psychology, social values, cultural identity, and literary expression. Consequently, Mir's poetry occupies a unique position where aesthetics, history, and human experience merge into a comprehensive poetic vision.
