Ambiguity or Multiple Meanings: An Old Debate in Poetry Criticism

Abstract

Semantic ambiguity is a critical problem in poetry. It is generally believed that ambiguity
occurs in poetry, due to which the meaning remains hidden in poetry. No meaning is clear in
the Poem and Ghazal. Another idea is that the ambiguity is in the reader, which can have
many reasons. The third reason is the poet himself who has been left some ideas artistically.
This article attempts to examine the different forms of ambiguity and to summarize the
findings whether the ambiguity is the reader, the text or the poet; where is it located?
